MD5 checksums are a way of checking the consistency and integrity of a downloaded file. We strongly advise that where possible all downloaded files are checked in this way. They are created by hashing the contents of the file to produce a fingerprint of the file. This can be downloaded separately and usually more reliably as they are smaller files. Checking these is essentially running the same process and ensuring that the output fingerprints are identical. If they are you can be confident that the download has been successful with no corruption of the file in transit. Further information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Md5sum. A free utility to check these is available on the jetNEXUS ftp servers.
